April 2002 - our 18th season GREENWAY WILL BE READY FOR YOU THIS SUMMER.
Plan to come to the Greenway Sound area, and enjoy all the Broughton Island scenery and activities. Our neighbors, too, are all doing well, and invite you to come this summer. There is so much to see and do, plus good boating friends to visit with. Going North is always a great adventure. Greenway Sound Marine Resort is there to provide you with a home away from home. Come on up.
THE RESTAURANT OPENS JUNE 14, FATHER'S DAY WEEKEND.
Be sure to make reservations. Desiree and Andrea will be there to greet and serve you. Everyone loved them last year, and we are glad they are returning. The Dinner Flights from Port McNeill will run again this year while daylight permits, usually through the end of July.Read more about the Greenway Restaurant.
NEW 'FREE' VIDEO LIBRARY IS BEING ESTABLISHED.
CHRISTINE (MUFFIN) O'DONNELL RETURNS TO THE ARK AT WINDSONG SEA VILLAGE.
Rather than trying to rent videos as in the past, we decided to make a video library similar to the pocketbook library. Boaters can borrow the videos, enjoy them, and return them free when they are finished. All of us have videos we have seen too many times, so please bring them to our new library. They will be fun for others, plus you may find some interesting ones for you and your group to watch. You might even find "How to use your Microwave." Think of what you might learn!
Christine (Muffin) O'Donnell returns to the Ark at Windsong Sea Village this summer. Many of you remember her and her two daughters, Cedar and Willow. They are located on the North shore of the entrance to Echo Bay. Christine has two cabins, moorage, and a fine art gallery with interesting things to buy. Call them as Windsong on VHF73. They will enjoy seeing you, and they hope you will stop in.CELL PHONES WILL PROBABLY WORK BETTER THIS YEAR.
Rogers AT&T, formerly Cantel, has added a cell tower at the Alert Bay airport. The high mountains around us still block calls throughout the Broughtons, but anytime you are line-of-sight with Alert Bay or Port Hardy, you should get service. It is all just analog as of now, but voice should work on most phones. Data services may not work, if they require digital phone service. There is a large section on our website on this subject.Read more about Cell Phone coverage at Greenway.
FISHING RULES AROUND GREENWAY ARE STILL THE SAME AS LAST YEAR.
The Coho are still Catch & Release as of this writing. The problem is still the Thompson River, off the Fraser, in which the Fisheries Dept. is trying to rebuild a run. The spawn was about destroyed in 1995, so they want to preserve every returning fish for rebuilding. Thus Coho retention is closed almost everywhere inside Cape Caution. There will be increased retention limits further North, such as Rivers Inlet or Seymour, where there is no chance the fish will go to the Thompson River. Normal limits are still available on all other fish in our area.
The very best source for information is www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca. That is Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Look for "Salmon Update." Also, there is an interactive phone site that gives fishing information at 1-877-320-3467 or in Nanaimo at 1-250-741-9000.
ROCK COD, LING COD AND BOTTOM FISH ENDANGERED? Rock Cod, Ling Cod, and most other bottom fish are becoming endangered, too. There is discussion about closing fishing for these species, too. Please take only what you need to eat and preserve the rest. We will carry some wonderful stinky prawn bait the commercial prawners use to replace the sport catching of Rock Cod for prawn bait. That should help save the Rock Cod.
AIRPLANE NEWS!
We hope you will invite a guest or two to fly up to join you. You can also leave your boat with us and fly home for a while. Float planes are part of the fun of boating.
Kenmore Air will be serving Greenway again this year. Kenmore always does a superb job of providing air service for us. They leave Kenmore WA, just North of Seattle at 9:00 AM, and leave Greenway at 12:30 PM for Kenmore. We have always been proud to be a major Kenmore Northern terminal. Our website links to theirs, for more information.
Northwest Seaplanes will serve Greenway, too. They leave Renton for Greenway at 7:45 AM and leave Greenway for Renton about 1:30 PM.
Visit our Air Connections page to learn the most about flying to and from Greenway Sound Marine Resort.
You can also click on the airplane to the left you'll "fly" to our Air Connections page non-stop.Check out the Greenway Sound Marine Resort website for all the flights: www.greenwaysound.com/aircon.htm
FISH-FARM MORATORIUM HAS BEEN LIFTED.
For many years, new fish farms have been prohibited in B.C. They could move around, but not increase in number. Now that the ban has been lifted, many fear all the bays will fill with fish farms. In reality, any new applications must meet stringent new safety and environmental rules, so they are not that inviting to investors. Meanwhile, the Chilean fish farm industry has flourished to the point that the price of farm Salmon is below where B.C. farms can make a profit. So we do not expect to see a great gold rush in fish farms.GREENWAY MUST ASSUME THE COST OF BROUGHTON PARK MAINTENANCE.
The B.C. Forest Service just announced that they no longer intend to maintain any of the Forest Service Parks, including ours. Greenway Sound Marine Resort has offered to maintain it as best we can, as we know so many of you enjoy it. This has happened once before, and we were able to keep it useable then. We provided the dock, ramp and anchors for the park anyway, so we can keep them up, too.Read more about Hiking at Greenway.
THE ENDOWMENT FOR GREENWAY CONTINUES TO GROW.
Endowments for specific projects established. Like a wing of a hospital, boaters can consider funding a specific part of the operation of Greenway Sound Marine Resort. Suggestions include a fire dept. or medical equipment, such as a defib machine. Maybe a boater would like to underwrite the park maintenance, or a classy new flagpole, or a social building, or some rowing boats. Greenway's profit margin can never provide everything all by itself. Besides, it would be fun to see how wonderful we can make the place.
Each year, more and more boaters have joined in the Endowment to preserve Greenway Sound Marine Resort for all boaters for all time. The fund is somewhere near it's mid-point, after which ownership can be converted to a permanent trust to hold. Greenway is too valuable for the boaters to lose. We all hope Greenway can join the Sucia Islands and Princess Louisa Inlet as a permanent boating treasure.Read more about the Greenway Sound Endownment.
See you this summer!
