April 2003 - our 19th season "There is no more pleasant place on Earth than to be on your boat in the Broughton Islands."
Come Ahead! Greenway Sound Marine Resort will be ready for you.
The great Restaurant will be open from mid-June until Labor Day. Our new ultra-fresh produce supplier is ready to stock our store. The airlines are all in operation. The Park is ready for you to explore, and the fish are planning to elude you as usual. The air is clear and fresh, the day-to-day news is hard to get, and there are no security checkpoints around the corner. Truly, there is no more pleasant place on Earth than to be on your boat in the Broughton Islands, British Columbia, Canada.
Diesel Fuel prices are returning to normal levels now.
After a meteoric increase, prices have dropped just as fast. There are positive signs that further decreases may occur before our season starts, so we think diesel prices will be similar to last year.
60 cents/liter Canadian is around $1.50 US for a US gallon. You can use that as a guideline. Some docks include the GST in the price, and others add it on. The GST is about 4 cents/liter or 7%.
The FINAL Government decision on our radio channel for calling marinas is:
Everything stays just as last year for this year. Marinas South of Comox are on 68, and North of Comox are all on 73. Next year, we all go to 66. Greenway is glad, because 66 has far better atmospherics than 73, and we will be able to hear you further away. Greenway will monitor both 73 and 66 this year. Disregard any information you see or hear about everybody changing to 68. The idea was discussed, but that channel is far too busy. It would never work. So, 73 for this year and 66 next year is correct.Internet access is still a problem for Greenway.
There is no easy way to provide satellite Internet service for our customers or for us at Greenway, due to our large mountain to the South. It blocks any access to the Internet satellites, which are very low in the SE sky. If you wish to connect to the Internet from your boat, use your cell phone while out in Johnstone or Queen Charlotte Straits, when you are line-of-sight with the cell towers at Alert Bay or Port Hardy airports. Shawl Bay and Echo Bay have some Internet support as well.
Fishing and prawning look good this year.
It is too early to tell if Coho will open, but there are many people working on getting at least a partial opening. We will have to wait and see. It all has to do with a spawn on the Thompson River, off the Frazer, 400 miles from us. We are now in our fifth year of a one-year closure. All other fishing seems normal. Come give it a try.
Cell phone “roaming” deals abound, and should be checked out now.
The cell phone industry is offering new plans where you can add unlimited roaming in Canada with a US cell phone. One package we heard about was that Verizon will add Canada for $10.00 a month. We found a Nextel-Telus interchange, which surprised us. It would seem in your best interests to contact your cell-phone provider, and ask about roaming in Canada with your phone. Also ask which system you would be on. There are only two: Telus Mobility and Rogers AT&T. Read more about Cell Phone coverage at Greenway.
All airlines are operating similarly to last year, plus there is one new one:
- Kenmore Air leaves Kenmore, WA at 9:00 AM and Greenway Sound Marine Resort at 12:30 PM.
- NW Seaplanes leaves Renton at 7:45 AM and Greenway Sound Marine Resort at 1:30 PM
- Corilair leaves Campbell River at 10:00 AM and 3:30 PM, and Greenway Sound Marine Resort at 11:30 AM and 4:30 PM.
- Vancouver Island Air leaves Campbell River at 9:00 AM weekdays and Greenway Sound Marine Resort at 10:30 AM.
- Pacific Eagle Air leaves Port McNeill at 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM daily, and leaves Greenway Sound Marine Resort at 10:30 AM and 4:30 PM for Port McNeill.
New this year, Helijet International is beginning service from Sea-Tac direct to Campbell River three times a day. There is a good mid-day connection at 1:30 PM, allowing same-day through service from distant US cities. This could be very useful for LAX, SFO, PDX, DEN, etc.

Two new books on our area are coming soon.
“North of Desolation” by Peter Vassilopoulos. It covers the area from Big Bay to Cape Caution, as it exists today, showing all the interesting things to see and do around us. It definitely will be a great addition to one’s cruising library. The other is “North of the Rapids” by Jennifer Hamilton, which covers the rich and fascinating history of our area during the heyday of logging, mining and fishing. So much has simply vanished from that era. Visitors and history buffs alike will all enjoy reading the book and looking for the historic sites.
If you would like to reserve a copy of either or both books, let us know.
The Greenway Endowment must succeed, and it needs your help and interest.
The Endowment’s goal is to add Greenway to the list of boating treasures, along with Sucia Island Park and Princess Louisa Inlet. As I recently enrolled in Medicare, I realized what a fine treasure I am holding. Greenway must not become a fish farm or a yacht club outstation. Let’s talk about it this summer, while there is time.Read more about the Greenway Sound Endownment.
See you this summer! Call for reservations and information.
