April 2004 - our 20th season

"There is no more pleasant place on Earth than to be on your boat in the Broughton Islands."

Come Ahead! Greenway Sound Marine Resort will be ready for you.
Beautiful sunset at GreenwayThe great Restaurant will be open from mid-June until Labor Day. Our new ultra-fresh produce supplier is ready to stock our store. The airlines are all in operation. The Park is ready for you to explore, and the fish are planning to elude you as usual. The air is clear and fresh, the day-to-day news is hard to get, and there are no security checkpoints around the corner. Truly, there is no more pleasant place on Earth than to be on your boat in the Broughton Islands, British Columbia, Canada.

What’s special about Greenway Sound Marine Resort? The Moorage has long, wide, red-carpeted docks for mooring, viewing, privacy, and walking. The Moorage includes subdued night lighting, unlimited fresh water with plenty for boat washing, clean restrooms, and a great Park to explore. Your moorage includes garbage service that involves flying it out to an environmentally responsible landfill in Port Hardy.

The long-established Restaurant features only the highest quality, freshest ingredients, and has superior preparation and presentation by an experienced chef. Special dietary needs can be accommodated for you professionally. Also, there are some contemporary new menu items coming this year. They should be fun.

The Store and Restaurant both benefit from our unique wholesale fresh produce connection, which delivers our produce direct from Vancouver overnight. Look in our store for fresh fruits and vegetables that are not often seen in boating outlets.

VHF channel 66A (USA mode) is our new channel, replacing 73.
Greenway is very happy to see 73 be replaced by 66A as our marina contact channel. 73 had a lot of interference problems, and was a weak Channel. 66A is clear and strong, and should be a lot better for all of us. Remember, use 66 in the USA mode, not Int’l.

We expect all Broughton area marinas to be on 66A from now on, and probably most of the coast. Greenway and others in our area will switch to a working frequency when you call, like 16, to help keep 66A clear for others. Greenway is planning to use 65 as our working frequency if it is clear.

The NEW BOOK IS OUT. "North of Desolation" by Peter Vassilopoulos.
Published by Seagraphic Publications in Vancouver, this book covers the Broughtons better than anyone before. The book's photographs are ALL in COLOR, and feature mostly aerial shots. There are lots of easy-to-understand charts and diagrams, and each marina facility and land feature is described beautifully. We are very proud of Peter's new book, and we encourage you to get one when you can.

Great prawning at Greenway!

Fishing and prawning look good this year.
It is too early to tell if Wild Coho will open this season, but there are many people working on getting at least a partial opening. Hatchery Coho is OK to keep in our area. Look for the clipped adipose fin.
We are in area 12-41. All other fishing seems normal.

An article entitled “A Cruise to Greenway” is a splendid new addition to www.greenwaysound.com.
Written by Don Chase of the trawler “Independence,” the article shows how Don cruises from Friday Harbor to Greenway, with all the challenges and stops along the way. It is provided for you to share with others to envision what happens when you go on a cruise to Greenway in the summer. It also would be useful for your friends who are planning their first trip to Greenway. Be sure to look all around our site. It is full of interesting and helpful information.

Cell phone service improved in our area this year.
There have been some technical improvements in our overall cell phone coverage, including the Telus installation of digital service. We think Rogers AT&T has done some improving as well, as it works better than it did. Your reception will still work best with a good, high antenna coupled to a powerful telephone. We still haven’t reached the point that handhelds will work just anywhere like at home. The towers are at the Alert Bay and Port Hardy airports. Your phones will work best if you are in clear line-of-sight with the towers at the airports. Any hill will block most of your signal.

All airlines are operating similarly to last year:

The time has come to put this newsletter on E-MAIL. Mailing and producing a hard copy newsletter is too expensive, and is limited in the amount of information we can give you. We hope you will give us your e-mail address, so we can keep in touch. Please send us an E-mail to greenwaysound@seanet.com with your address. Thank you.

See you this summer! Call for reservations and information.
