April 2005 - our 21st season

"There is no more pleasant place on Earth than to be on your boat in the Broughton Islands."

COME enjoy the ENCORE performance of Greenway Sound Marine Resort with Tom & Ann. Although health issues last season and this winter caused long-term uncertainty, we feel we can go for one last Grand Season.

The restaurant will be OPEN for dinner only, beginning Father’s Day, June 19, 2005, by reservation only. Seating will be limited to Ann’s ability and the competence of the staff. Call 250-974-7044 or on VHF Channel 66A.

All the other marina services will be offered including the store with great fresh produce, the ice cream and espresso, the park, the airplane service, the beautiful moorage with 24 hr. power, the abundant water, and docks for walking.

GREENWAY is FOR SALE. This is definitely not what we want to do, but at this time, no other choice seems available to us. We sincerely hope we can find younger people to provide the services at Greenway for the boaters. It is a wonderful opportunity for a family to live a lifestyle that is wholesome and healthy.

The Endowment Plan, which envisioned sufficient funding to insure Greenway’s permanence, is about half subscribed by 80 boaters. Completing the Endowment is still a viable option. We are extremely grateful to all those who have helped in so many ways over the years. Greenway, even yet, could and should join Sucia Islands and Princess Louisa Inlet as permanent boating treasures.

DIESEL PRICES are about the SAME in Canada as US, as of April 2005. Although annoyingly high right now, there is always the chance it will come down by summer. Two years ago, it did just that. After a meteoric rise, it came down just as fast.

You can cut fuel costs by removing weight from your boat, carrying less water while enroute, using tides to your advantage, running slower, using your auto-pilot to steer a straight course, tuning engines, straightening props, cleaning your hull, and using trim tabs carefully. We have had excellent results keeping our injectors clean and governors lubricated with Chevron’s DieselMotive additive.

Introducing TOM’S MAGIC MULTIPLIER for fuel calculations. To convert a Canadian price per litre to US gallons in US dollars, simply multiply the Canadian price by three (3) to get an approximate conversion. For instance, if the fuel is 80c per litre at Nanaimo, multiply by 3 to get $2.40, which is about the equivalent for a US gallon in US dollars. (Technically, it is 3.785 x .80 exchange, or 3.028). GST at 7% might be added. Some docks include it in the price.

All airlines are operating similarly to last year: Plan to leave your boat at Greenway Sound Marine Resort and fly home for a while. Also, it is always fun to invite a guest for a few days, using Greenway’s flexible air service. Greenway can help in planning these activities.

The book "North of Desolation" by Peter Vassilopoulos, 2004 is in it's second printing.
Congratulations, Peter. It is a splendid, all colour account of our Broughton Islands and surrounding areas. We were also very pleased with the new “Waggoner” cruising guide by Robert Hale, now in full colour. These are both “must have” books for this season.

New book! North of Desolation.
www.greenwaysound.com continues to grow.
Our website is a wealth of cruising information, airplane connections, and descriptions. Be sure to check it out.

The phones are changing at Greenway Sound Marine Resort.
The only two numbers that are good this summer are 250-974-7044 (an Alert Bay number, dialed free from Port McNeill) and our year-round La Conner number 360-466-4751, which forwards to Greenway in the summer. Delete everything else.

Beautiful North of Desolation cruising

We look forward to seeing you this summer. We hope you will be able to give some thought to the future of Greenway. Maybe you know someone who would be interested in it, or could put together a consortium to own and operate it. Better yet, think how fun it would be to sit next to Ev Henry and the Interclub who saved Sucia, and Mac MacDonald and the Princess Louisa Society whose foresight gave us the incomparable Princess Louisa. Greenway deserves to be in that league. It is a natural treasure that should be saved for the boaters. We should and must do this.

See you this summer! Call for reservations and information.
