April 2006 - our 22nd season "There is no more pleasant place on Earth than to be on your boat in the Broughton Islands."
Come on up! Greenway Sound Marine Resort will be OPEN and ready for you by June 1. Tom and Ann will be there. The fine moorage is open and power is on. Our new ultra-fresh produce supplier is ready to stock our store. The airlines are all in operation. The Park is ready for you to explore, and the fish are planning to elude you as usual. The air is clear and fresh, the day-to-day news is hard to get, and there are no security checkpoints around the corner. Truly, there is no more pleasant place on Earth to be than on your boat in the Broughton Islands, British Columbia, Canada.
What’s so special about Greenway? The Moorage has long, wide, red-carpeted docks for mooring, viewing, privacy, and walking. Your moorage includes subdued night lighting, unlimited fresh water with plenty for boat washing, clean restrooms, and a great Park to explore. Your moorage includes garbage service that involves flying it out to an environmentally responsible landfill near Port Hardy.
What about the restaurant? At this writing in April 2006, we are not sure what we can do in the way of restaurant service. Most of you know that Ann Taylor, the creator and chef for the last 21 years of our fine restaurant has serious health issues, and is no longer physically capable of performing the daily rigorous duties of a busy chef.
We have tried to hire a chef or cook and have had no success in finding anyone who wants to fill Ann’s shoes or that we can afford. We are still looking, and we hope someone will come and help us open the restaurant. We have every intention of having some form of food service, possibly with a modified menu. We will do the best we can.
VHF channel 66A (USA mode) is our marina calling channel, replacing 73. Greenway Sound Marine Resort is very happy to see 73 be replaced by 66A as our marina contact channel. 73 had a lot of interference problems, and was a weak channel. 66A is clear and strong, and should be a lot better for all of us. Remember, use 66 in the USA mode, not International.
All Broughton area marinas are on 66A now, and probably most of the coast. Greenway Sound Marine Resort and others in our area will switch to a working frequency when you call, just like we all use 16 now, to help keep 66A clear for others. Greenway Sound Marine Resort is planning to use 65 as our “switch to” working frequency if it is clear.
“NORTH of DESOLATION”, by Peter Vassilopoulos, is in its SECOND PRINTING. It covers the Broughtons better than anyone before. The book’s photographs are ALL in COLOR, and feature mostly aerial shots. There are lots of easy-to-understand charts and diagrams, and each marina facility and land feature is described beautifully. We are very proud of Peter’s new book, and we encourage you to get one when you can. Greenway is happy to carry this book. If you don’t already have one, be sure to pick up a copy. Fishing and prawning look good this year. Last year the DFO finally opened Wild Coho to one a day, plus one hatchery Coho a day. Hatchery Coho have a clipped adipose fin. We are in area 12-40 & 41. All other fishing seems normal. Come give it a try.
You can cut fuel costs by removing weight from your boat, carrying less water while enroute, using tides to your advantage, running slower, using your auto-pilot to steer a straight course, tuning engines, straightening props, cleaning your hull, and using trim tabs carefully. We have had excellent results keeping our injectors clean and governors lubricated with Chevron’s DieselMotive additive. It all helps.
An article entitled “A Cruise to Greenway” is a splendid recent addition to www.greenwaysound.com, written by Don Chase of the trawler “Independence.” The article shows how Don cruises from Friday Harbor to Greenway Sound Marine Resort, with all the decisions and stops along the way. It is provided for you to envision what to plan for when you go on a cruise to Greenway Sound Marine Resort in the summer, or for a friend’s first trip. Would you like to leave your boat and fly home? Greenway Sound Marine Resort is a great place to leave your boat for a while to fly home. We walk by it several dozen times a day, giving your boat a high level of surveillance. The power is on 24/7. You can leave a provision list with us for groceries to have for you when you return. We stock fresh produce and dairy through the season, and can special-order goods for you if there is enough time.

GREENWAY is still FOR SALE. Of course we wish we didn’t have to sell it, but our physical constraints are hampering our ability to provide services. It is time for stronger, younger owners. We are open to all sorts of scenarios, so it could be a very good deal for someone. Click here to read the whole story.
